Description

The manner of their meeting was unprecedented. During the lawless mayhem that followed the capture of Badajoz by Wellington, a 14 year old Spanish girl sought the protection of Captain Harry Smith. They fell in love and married shortly after. From then on their lives and careers were inextricably linked and Juana not only followed her able, brave and ambitious husband but built her own formidable reputation. The book describes their lives together starting with the remaining battles of the Peninsula War. Harry Smith was already a favourite of Wellington. His card was marked and his career prospered. He distinguished himself in numerous campaigns and theatres. It will however be the couple's achievements and legacy in South Africa that they are best associated with. Travelers to Natal are reminded of this by the towns of Ladysmith and Harrysmith. SELLING POINTS: Lady Smith is a name with deep significance due to the celebrated relief of the siege. The book covers a broad span of military history but will appeal to both sexes due to its inherent romantic theme and the life of the resourceful Lady Smith. 20 b/w photos

Author Biography:

David Rooney saw war service in India and West Africa as a Captain in the Queen's Royal Regiment. After the war he read history at Keble College, Oxford, and went on to a teaching career in Belfast, Germany and England, including four years as a Senior Lecturer at Sandhurst. He is a Life Member of Clare Hall, Cambridge, and continues to lecture and write. Michael Scott is a writer, photographer, consultant, cruise ship lecturer and occasional radio broadcaster on a wide range of natural history subjects. He has a degree in botany, and a particular interest in Scottish, arctic and alpine wild flowers. He also shares an interest in Scottish sea life with his marine biologist wife, Sue Scott. He is a former Deputy Chairman of Scottish Natural Heritage, the government conservation agency in Scotland and a former Chairman of Scottish Environment Link. He is also a member of the Advisory Board of Plantlife International, the wild plant conservation charity. He was awarded an OBE in 2005 for services to biodiversity conservation in Scotland.
