Description

In Garageland presents a detailed ethnographic study of three young Swedish rock bands and their fans. It explores the functions of their rock playing within three socially different peer groups and how their activities relate to the external demands and resources of a postmodern world. Graphically structured in a 'dialogic' format in which the 'authorative' text is juxtaposed with the remarks of those interviewed, the authors analyse the objective, social, symbolic and subjective sources and meanings of their rock playing, relating this to theories on modernity, social groups, cultural symbols and psychodynamic subjectivity. In Garageland represents a major contribution to current debates in cultural studies about popular music and youth culture, offerign at the same time a much wider discussion of late modernist (or postmodernist) perspectives.
