Description

How to Be Happy by Lydia Howard Sigourney is a short children's book containing detailed instruction on what the author, a very proper lady born in the close of the 18th century, believed to be the requirements for a happy childhood. Written with the best of intentions this, now rather dated, book is typical of the beliefs of the period in which it was written and features such chapters as "Love to obey your Superiors" and "Treat Domestics with propriety." Not that much of the content is not still relevant in the present day; we can hardly argue with the commands to "Be kind to Animals" and "Be Industrious," however much of the instruction, if largely simply because of the style of writing, holds more in entertainment than it does in educational value in the modern world.
