Description

Excerpt from How the Study of History Is Let and Hindered: An Address, Delivered in the Liverpool Institute 19th November, 1879 Imagination which makes so many people see the things which are not. It is not the chastened and practical imagina tion dwelled upon by Mr. Gosc-hen, but the forward delusive faculty denounced by Bishop Butler, which sometimes enables men in the afi'airs of the present to shut their eyes to the things which are close under their noses, and to see things which are, to sav the' least, very far beyond the horizon. So again it sometimes enables men, in the aflairs of the past, to shut their eyes to the facts set down in the book which is lying open before them, and to write instead a pretty and touching story, to which the only objection is the small.
