Description

As the slums of the industrial revolution were replaced with mass high-rise, high density estates throughout Europe, each country has experienced a variety of problems over such issues as rehousing and renewal, urban change, racial tension, and political controversey. To tackle these, new new policies and rescue programmes, have been introduced with varying degrees of success. The text offers an important comparative study of state housing in Europe. Based on detailed research from five countries, carried out with close reference to the central housing bodies in each area, Anne Power highlights the convergence in housing experience between the countries and the lessons that can be learnt. Looking at the historical developments within each of the different housing systems both private and public, she analyses the policy initiatives and the changing structure of social housing. By exploring the similarities and differences throughout Europe, Anne Power is able to draw a picture of European-wide commitment to urban integration.
