Description

Excerpt from History of the Huguenot Emigration to America, Vol. 1 I have undertaken to narrate the coming of the perse outed Protestants of France to the New World, and their establishment, particularly in the seaboard provinces now comprehended within the United States. This movement and settlement took place principally at the time of the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes. But before that period, important emigrations had already occurred; emigrations to Acadia, or Nova Scotia, to Canada, to the French West Indies, and, by way of Holland, to the Dutch possession of New Netherland - now New York. And still earlier, the effort had been made by Coligny - unsuccessfully, indeed - to plant a colony and provide a retreat for the French Calvinists, first in Brazil, and afterward in Florida.
