Excerpt from Hearing and How to Keep It The internal ear is often called the labyrinth, on account of its perplexing structure and the obscurity which has hung about its composition and function, and which still hangs about some parts of it, so that it still deserves its name. It comprises the vestibule, an anterior part, as implied in its name, and the cochlea, or snail-shell, lying in front of the vestibule, the semicircular canals which lie behind it, and the auditory nerve, or nerve of hearing, lying beyond, between it and the brain, which sends nerve-branches to it.
