I remember having this read to me when I was around 8–9 years old. I always vividly remembered it. So, I decided to read it to my 7 year old son. He ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT. I've never seen him more engaged when it comes to reading or being read to.
For anyone reading this for details about the age appropriateness of the story. It contains 3 story lines that may have an affect on young minds. 1. It touches on divorce of the protagonist's paÂrents – so be weary when reading to children who may have gone through this. 2. It has some very short, yet scary scenes with a certain character who has an accident. The third story point that can be a little touchy is suicide. While it's not obvious, and there is not actual suicide in the story (not a real spoiler so don't worry), it is mentioned so be aware.
This is a fantastic book. If you like this when you finish, my suggestion is to go straight to ‘Brian's Winter’ as it progresses as an alternate ending to this book.
