This volume presents a devastating critique of the currently fashionable idea of globalisation, where the kind of global economy that is in the process of forming is seen as the highest possible form of economy, and the neoliberal economic orthodoxy on which it rests. Global Neoliberalism locates the incoherence of neoliberal policy in the neoclassical theories of distribution and welfare on which it depends. These in turn are based on faulty assumptions about human nature and so are unable to answer the question; "What leads to a good economic outcome?". Alternative egalitarian theories of welfarism from heterodox economics and political philosophy, especially those of Amartya Sen, are shown to provide a n adequate normative framework for assessing economic outcomes. This volume interrogates whether any global economic mode of distribution can be proposed given the cultural and value diversity in the world. George DeMartino develops an internationalist ethic that tolerates cultural diversity while resisting oppression. This is compared to global neoliberalism whose apparent respect for cultural diversity in socio-economic arrangements leads to an imperialism of free market culture. The author concludes by looking at how an egalitarian internationalism based on Sen's principle of "capabilities equality" might look in practice.
