It is safe to say that Ito's Frankenstein is an eerie, totally atmospheric and absorbing horror manga.
The book itself is gorgeous, and feels great to hold, and looks equally great on the shelf. If you're after a good looking horror manga for your shelf, this is one I could wholeheartedly recommend. But as for the actual content of the book, the art is just gorgeous – or delightfully morbid.
Frankenstein is both the headliner and the highlight of the book. Every single image is atmospheric, and demands your attention. The famous monster of the story is illustrated fantastically by Ito, who gives him distinctly human features and traits, but at the same time perfectly monstrous and wrong. While I haven't yet read the story of Frankenstein as written by Mary Shelley, Ito's adaptation works marvelously, carrying what I think are all the important plot points, giving time for tension to mount, and then paying off those stretches of tension with one-page spreads of gorgeous artwork, or a flurry of events. All in all, a fantastic horror comic that is a must-read. 5/5.
