Description

William Edward Forster, MP, joined the first Gladstone government in 1868 and piloted the 1870 Education Act through parliament. In 1880 he became chief secretary for Ireland in the second Gladstone administration, but he resigned in May 1882 in protest against the release of Parnell from Kilmainham prison.
