Description

Excerpt from Earthquake Hazards Reduction Act Authorization: Hearing Before the Subcommittee on Science, Technology, and Space of the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, United States Senate, Ninety-Seventh Congress, First Session on Earthquake Hazards Reduction Act Authorization; April 6, 1981 I, Of course, feel that the Federal Government has shown an abysmal lack Of urgency in this matter. In fact, your statement gives the conclusion of the National Security Council study that is essentially the same as some of us were trying to get you to agree to in 1977. It doesn't make me feel any better. And I am not blaming just the previous administration. I think many administra tions in recent years have been, for some reason, unwilling to face the fact Of the danger that is faced, not only by cities along the San Andreas and related fault systems, but some other major urban areas in this country. I don't know what to do about that. I don't think it's going to happen this year, either, but I see no sign that we are really focusing our national capability, even within budgetary constraints, on a problem that clearly is going to leave everybody with egg on their face when it occurs.
