Jefferson was anxious that Lewis should get to press with these papers hence this reference. Later, upon Lewis's death, Clark arranged with Dr. Benjamin Smith Barton, of Philadelphia, to prepare the scientific data for publica tion; but Barton's death intervened, and these data were not published until 1904, edited by the present writer.
