Excerpt from Dissertations on the Apostolic Age The present volume consists of five dissertations reprinted from Dr Lightfoot's published commentaries upon St Paul's Epistles. The Trustees of the Lightfoot Fund feel that there must be a large number of English readers who will be glad to possess in a form separate from the Greek text and commentary such of the late Bishop's valuable excursuses as from the nature of the subjects treated admit of this severance without loss of clearness. This necessary limitation appears to the Trustees to point to the omission of the introductions to the Epistles in question and of one dissertation (were the Galatians Celts or Teutons appended to the commentary upon the Epistle to the Galatians. I Q The dissertations are reprinted just as they stand in the commentaries. N o attempt has been made to enlarge the footnotes or references. But at the close of the Essay on the Christian Ministry two short appendices have been added, one giving Dr Lightfoot's final opinion upon the genuineness of the seven Greek Ignatian Epistles, the other consisting of a collee tion of extracts from his own writings, which was printed by him a year or so before his death to illustrate his view of the Christian Ministry over and above the particular scope of the.
