Description

Excerpt from Discourse Commemorative of Rev. Rufus Anderson, D.D., LL. D: Late Corresponding Secretary of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, Together With Addresses at the Funeral In that little group of sixteen men, soon joined by others from the Province of Ulster, was James Anderson, the great-grandfather of Dr. Rufus Anderson. To no other settlement perhaps in our country did there come immi grants more homogeneous, more strictly religious, more deliberate in forming their Opinions, or more inflexible in maintaining them. Neither poverty-stricken nor wealthy, they prized their faith and freedom above all treasures. They were Scotch, pure and simple; 1 a race characterized by thoughtfulness, firmness, love of liberty and love of country. The name of Anderson from Londonderry appears among the resolute men at Bunker Hill General Stark was of the same kith and kin, and it may be affirmed without exaggeration that the blood of Londonderry has reddened every battlefield over which the flag of our nation waves.2 Transmission of qualities is certain; an individu ality of type will go on from generation to generation, and national accent marks the mind, as truly as the tongue, of a people.
