Drawing on the author's own experience of using and researching student portfolios in the US, Australia and Hong Kong, this book analyzes the implications for the development of the portfolio for assessment. The portfolio is a file of course work that the student gathers throughout his/her schooling. It is intended for use in all phases of education and professional development and in a variety of ways. Portfolios aim to: help the student master subject knowledge; help them develop reflective practice; aid professional preparation, such as the planning of lessons; assess a student's progress; and help the student gain employment. The author discusses and analyzes the impact of portfolio use on assessment, curriculum and pedagogy and integrates learning and assessment theories with practice.
