The team that created the smash hits Descent and Descent II felt that the vertigo inducing tunnels of the first two games did not satisfy them. They have decided to expand the Descent universe in a logical direction, the only place they have not yet covered, space. The new title is a saga of high speed battles fought across the vastness of space. The Terran military faces a new foe. No longer is it the familiar Vasudans. A new threat has arisen, the Shivans. This race appears to have no desire to communicate with other races, they wish simply for their destrcution. You must battle not only for an area of space, but for the future survival of humanity in Descent: Freespace - The Great War.

As the Great War rages on, you've been commissioned by the GTI (Galactic Terran Intelligence) for special intelligence operations. In a matter of National Security, you've been asked to go behind enemy lines in order to preserve the fragile space treaty.
