Excerpt from Cornish Ballads Other Poems The text of the poems is that of the 1899 edition, except in two instances. In the case of the Trelawny Ballad, or Song of the Western Men, Mr. Wallis had placed the earliest version in the text and the later improvements in a footnote. This order has been reversed; for, though the original form of the ballad is interesting as having been the one which deceived Scott and Macaulay, the later version represents Hawker's maturer taste, and is no doubt that which he would wish to be perpetuated. The actual differ ences are slight in extent, but important in quality. A similar change has been made in the fourth stanza of The Lady's Well, on page 124.
