Volumes have already been devoted to that purpose, and the many phases of his life, character, aims and attainments, and their influence in, and bearing on the founding and development of the institutions of a free and enlightened people, will prove a fruitful and interesting theme for future historians, so long as such institutions survive. It will be our purpose, therefore, after giving such account of the origin and ances try of the family as is known, to devote our attention more especially to that branch of the family who have living descendants in America.
