Description

Excerpt from Class of 1879 Secretary's Report, No. III: Commencement, 1885 The frontispiece to the Report represents the John Harvard statue, by Daniel C. French, of Concord, Mass, presented to the college last fall by Samuel Bridgman, of Cambridge. It stands in the delta, near Memorial Hall. The illustration is too small to dojustice to the handsome, earnest, Scholarly face of the original. The face is, of course, ideal. Little is known of Harvard save that he died at about the age of 27. I have been unable to secure for this Report an account of the progress of the University, such as we had from Taussig in 1882. The principal changes have been in the erection and use of the new Law School, and the Jefferson Physical Laboratory, on Holmes' Field, and of the Medical School building on Boylston street, in Boston. There is another horse-car line between Cambridge and Boston, and the Cambridge street bridge is now bright with electric lights. The old gymnasium serves as the college carpenter shop, while the old law-school building is the headquarters of the Co operative Society.
