Excerpt from Christ Crucified, or the Marrow of the Gospel, Vol. 2: Evidently Set Forth in LXXII Sermons on the Whole 53d Chapter of Isaiah What is rendred deatb here in Our tranflation, IS deatbs 111 the plural number 111 the Hebrew to thew the greatnefs and te1riblenefs of the death which he underwent, and the fore fpiritual as well as bodil ly exercife that he was put unto at, and 111 his death; fo that it was a complication of many deaths 111 one, and at once, which he qered. 2. Where it is faid in our tranilanon, that, be made bi: grajve, in the or1g1nal it is, be gave bzs grave witb ibe wicked; fo that the pronoun be may he meant, either of the Fe z'ber his giving, or it may be underflood of the Medi ator' 3 giving himfelf; and (0 the meaning is, that it came not to pais by gneis on God's fide, but was by him well ordered; and tipon the Mediator's fide it fets f01th his willingnefs to go to the grave, and his having an over ruling hand, as God, in his own death and burial; as he faith, John 11. 18. No man tabez'b my life from me, but I lay 11' down myfelf; his death and burial wete determined and well ordered, as to all the circumflances of both, by a divine de cree and by an over-ruling handfof providence, and this agrees well with the reafon fubjoined becaufe he willingly condefcended to die; God put a difference betwixt him and others, as is clear in that of John x.
