Description

Excerpt from Catalogue of a Selection of Prints, Arranged Chronologically to Illustrate the Various Processes of Engraving Invented From the 15th to the End of the 18th Century: November 25, 1893, to May 20, 1894 The selection of prints here catalogued, although arranged chronologically and by countries, does not aspire to offer a complete, or even a tolerably full, illustration of the history of engraving. To reach this aim, there is neither sufficient space at command, nor are the resources of the Museum rich enough, even with the aid of its friends. All that has been attempted, therefore, has been to give some idea of the tech nical development of the various multiplying processes in vented from the fifteenth to the end of the eighteenth cen tury. It is evident from this statement that the substitute processes and the photo-mechanical processes, which were more especially illustrated in the exhibition held about two years ago, have not been included. The thanks of the Museum are due, for valuable speci mens lent, to Miss Laura Norcross, Mr. Horatio Greenough Curtis, and Prof. Charles Eliot Norton. The John Witt Randall collection has also been largely drawn upon. In connection with this exhibition the undersigned will deliver a course of eight lectures, on Old and Modern Methods of Engraving, before the Lowell Institute, begin ning on Dec. 19, 1893.
