Excerpt from Calendar of Charters and Documents Relating to the Possessions of Selborne and Its Priory: Preserved in the Muniment Room of Magdalen College, Oxford Hartley Mauduit had given two acres to the chapel there, and about 1248 - 50, Walter Aynolf gave half-an-acre of his land to the church of St. Michael at Basingstoke. Under date of 1224 we find the office of churchwarden recognised as being charged with the expenditure of money to be laid out upon repairs or other church-work one-third of the oblations at Basingstoke is to be kept in the hands of two lawful parishioners for such purposes, and they are to have a voice in the appointment of the person, a chaplain or clerk, who should be nominated to receive the oblations when at first presented.
