Under date of 1224 we find the office of churchwarden recognised as being charged with the expenditure of money to be laid out upon repairs or other church-work one-third of the oblations at Basingstoke is to be kept in the hands of two lawful parishioners for such purposes, and they are to have a voice in the appointment of the person, a chaplain or clerk, who should be nominated to receive the oblations when at first presented.
