The Chinese used to say that they were not only willing, but ready to use force to liberate Taiwan. We also decided not to immediately abro gate our mutual - defense treaty with Taiwan, but to phase it out over one year, in accordance with one of the clauses in the treaty. And the question of arms sales to Taiwan was settled when the Chinese agreed to allow us to continue to sell arms to them.
