One can do no less than acknowledge herein the kindness and courtesy of those who have placed the author under obligations by giving valuable assistance or granting special privileges. Acknowledgments are due to Mr. John A. Farley, who has edited the work; Mr. Arthur H. Norton of the Portland Society of Natural History who has furnished authentic information regarding Maine records, and to Mr. John H. Edmonds for an opportunity to examine ancient maps and records of Massachusetts preserved in the archives of the Commonwealth. Mr. P. A. Taverner of the Canadian National Memorial Museum at Ottawa, Ontario, Drs. Jonathan Dwight and Frank M. Chapman of the American Museum of Natural History at New York City, Dr. C. W. Richmond of the National Museum at Washington, D. C., Messrs. Samuel Henshaw, Outram Bangs, and James L.
