Don't be put off by Games for Windows Live. Just create an offline account instead of an online one and GFWL doesn't cause any problems.
I have played plenty of titles on GFWL and with an offline account, I have experienced zero problems.

The excellence that was Arkham Asylum is reason enough to pick up this game.
Asylum used Games for Windows Live also and was pretty sucessful. I don't understand why people are surprised/up set that this is continuing. I think GFWL works well and I've had no major problems with the platform.

Will not buy another Games for Windows LIVE product after using it with Arkham Asylum. Installing the game took 10 minutes, installing LIVE took a couple of hours including internet searches for possible solutions
