When I bought this game I was initially apprehensions about trying this
game, due to my loyalty to the comics and not wanting to see such characters
destroyed, I was, overall, extremely impressed with the game.
The fighting was great, the characters were awesome, the voice acting was
brilliant and the game was extremely fun to play.
While I was a bit cautious as to how they would approach fighting- as you're
Batman, the snecky, muscle-bound ninja who hides from no one- but I found the
gameplay to be a good blend between outright brawls and sneakily taking down
thugs. Seeing them panic and freak out after decimating their numbers one by one
by snatching them off ledges and stringing them up by gargoyles was hilarious.
But even in outright fighting the game didn't dissapoint. Even if it was overall
a fairly simplistic button layout to the fighting, Batman would leap, jump and
perform inceasingly complex attacks as the fighting esculated.
This was also one of the recent games I've played that doesn't involved the
main character using guns of any sort; though I did find this fustrating in a
few parts -mainly due to my own incompetence- it was a great deal of fun having
to use my wits to overcome snipers and thugs armed with machine guns.
The characters themselves were awesome. The Joker was hilarious, creepy and
vicious, just as he ought to be. His snarky banter made me giggle throughout the
game as he spoke through the intercom and his apperance was unique but close
enough to the original design without alienating it. Harley was also another
character I liked; while in the comics she's fairly ditzy and slavish, in
Arkham Asylum you could really see she had lost it and was a complete pyschopath
dedicated to her darling Joker. While I was more fond of her original comic
outfit, I liked the Easter Egg where you found her Harlequin headgear in her
old office. Edward got quite a makeover and I loved it; his rage over you
solving his riddles were hilarious (especially when he acused me of using the
internet hohoho) as well as his obvious “I'm so much smarter than you HA”
attitude. The character I loved the most though, was Dr Crane, aka Scarecrow.
He's always been my favourite Rogues Gallery member and I was buzzed to see
him in the game, sneaky around and generally being a psycho. The whole crazy,
fear-gas tripping scenes were awesome and his entire design was great.
Only a few things let me down, namely the whole interaction with Killer Croc.
I was freaked out when you first met him, this gigantic snarly, fanged thing,
then when he tried to have a go at you later on, the whole venture into his lair
left a lot to be desired, as you smacked him and knocked him back into the
water, like whacking a disobident dog with a rolled up newspaper. The confined
area of Arkham Asylum meant I wasn't able to glide all over the place and
Batman's weird inablitiy to swim was kinda strange, but apart from that, this
was an excellent game and throughly recommend.
