Description

Published in 1988, this children's scrapbook is based on an oral history project conducted by Pauline Cheek. Cheek based her fictional characters, Mrs. Gwen Carter, Eugene, Emma, and Ellie, on her own adventures and those of her three children, Edith, Edwin, and Elizabeth. The scrapbook narrates the culture and heritage of the Southern Highlands and has been a great addition to classrooms since its publication.

Author Biography:

Pauline Cheek spent her formative years in the Piedmont and Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. Her degrees include an A.B. from Wake Forest, a M.A.T from Duke University, and a M. Divinity degree from Earlham School of Religion in Richmond, Indiana. Throughout her schooling she became increasingly interested in ecology, peacemaking, and experiential education, and participated in exchanges that involved interpreting Appalachia to people in Denmark, Belize, and Cuba.
