John Winthrop, at Salem, June 12, 1620, a Sequel of the Memorial; Presentation of the Portrait of President Salisbury to the American Antiquarian Society, Oct. 21, 1878 Dear sir: Two years ago, when visiting the building of the Society at Worcester, I saw a Oopy, or what was intended for a copy, of the portrait of John Endecottfi'e It struck me as so imperfect, and that it did such poor justice to the original, that I then resolved to give to the Society a good copy of the original picture. Circumstances have delayed the accomplishment of this purpose, but I have finally succeeded in obtaining a very excellent copy. I have sent it to Worcester, by express, directed to you, and desire that you present it to the American Antiquarian SO ciety, from me, to be preserved in your collections, with your other historical portraits. It was painted by Mr. Southland, of Salem, from the original portrait, now in the possession of my father, William P. Endicott, of Salem. The original descended to him as the oldest son of the Oldest son direct from the Governor, together with the sword with which the cross' was cut from the King's colors, and a few other heirlooms.
