Description

Excerpt from Annual Report of the Department of Mines, 1929: In Two Sections; Section I. Report to Governor, Directory of Mines, Coal and Coke Statistics; Section II. Accidents Fatal, Non-Fatal and Minor, Prosecutions, Miscellaneous Due to the constantly declining market prices of coal, the coal opera tors are forced to economize to the fullest extent. Sometimes this economy is practiced to the extreme. Fortunately we have been able in most cases to convince those' in charge of the mines that economy should be practiced consistent with maximum safety, that is, any saving of money that will increase the hazard exposure Of the workmen is bad policy and will eventually lead to an increased number of accidents and a general run down condition of their mines. The wide differential in freight rates on the shipment of West Vir ginia coal to the lakes places a tremendous handicap on our coal Opera tors, one that is not only unjust, but, if continued, will result in the closing of many of our mines and severe idleness and hardships in our mining communities. It is to be hoped that we will soon get relief from the Interstate Commerce Commission, and these differentials will be entirely eliminated or at least greatly reduced.
