Description

Excerpt from Anfang Und Ende Paul Heyse is to-day nearing the end of a long life. For the last fifty years his name has been among the foremost in German literature. He was born in Berlin, March 15, 1830, the son of the renowned grammarian and university professor W. L. Heyse. In 1852 he finished his university studies in the Romance languages and literatures by passing the examination for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The next two years he spent in Italy; during this period his interest in the people dwelling on the ground of the old Roman empire was deepened, and most of the Italian scenes that serve so frequently as a background in his novels and short stories were then discovered. Then, accepting an invitation of Maximilian II of Bavaria, that noble and genuine pro tector and promoter of art in all its forms, he took up his residence in Munich, and since then has left this traditional center of German art only when journeying in the father land or occasionally returning to the country of his love, to Italy.
