The title of this volume is perhaps in some degree likely to deter those for whose benefit it is mainly designed as it may seem to promise a highly speculative discussion and a metaphysical style of language - now become prevalent among the antagonists of modern sceptical philosophy. This has been forced upon many able divines who have undertaken to contend with the rationalism of a foreign school: but, however useful it may be in the counteraction of an infidel philosophy, it has introduced a tone of discussion far above the intellect of the edu cated multitude. I think it for this reason not wholly needless to explain at the outset, the actual character and design of the method of the following Discourses. Whatever degree of originality I may claim for the ar gument in its general application, the matter of its pre.
