Being without command he asked Washington for command of his body-guard which consisted of thirty horse. Here he signalized himself, fully sustaining the reputation the world had given him. Four days later he received his commission as brigadier-general in command of the cavalry. In every engagement he was to the front, and always noted for his fearless attacks in points of danger.
