The Williams College Museum of Art (the College itself was established in 1793 in Williamstown, Massachusetts) houses an important collection of paintings and drawings, watercolours, sculptures, photographs, prints, posters and decorative arts. It also houses unparalleled holdings of the work of Maurice and Charles Prendergast, the 19th-century political cartoonist Thomas Nast and cartoonist Rube Goldberg. This eclectic volume features colour plates with essays about painting and sculpture by: American old masters Copley, West, Homer, Harnett, Peto, Whistler, Eakins, Twachtman and Bellows; early modernists Weber, Demuth, Hartley, Stella, Marin, O'Keefe, Feininger and Shahn; modern masters Hofmann, Hopper, Avery, Lawrence and Cadmus; colonial furniture from Kiowa Indian drawings; and the photography of Man Ray.
