If you're on the hunt for good books for young readers, chances are you've heard of the irreverent, underwear-clad superhero, Captain Underpants, who has 12 books, a movie, and a Netflix original series to his name. Now, Dav Pilkey has a new dog-headed hero, and he's ready to take a bite out of crime…literally! It's Dog Man!
At the police station, Officer Knight and police dog Greg are the two worst cops ever, according to Chief. But when an accident involving a bomb lands both of them in the hospital, the operation results in the birth of Dog Man, a new hero with the head of a dog and the body of a cop. Can Dog Man defend the city from Petey, the world's most evil cat, and emerge the top dog- Or will he just end up in the doghouse-
Fans of Captain Underpants will know just what to expect with this book: clever(ish) heroes, maniacal villians, crazy gadgets, and of course, Flip-O-Rama action sequences.
Also, as with all of the Captain Underpants books, there is plenty of scatological humour as well (my favourite part is when Dog Man tries to solve the mystery of who pooped in Chief's office).
Parents will also appreciate this story, as like with all of Pilkey's other books, there are a few big words, like ‘counterfeit’, ''psychological', and ‘immune’, that will help kids to learn new words while reading about Dog Man.
The only downside of this book is that unlike the Captain Underpants series, all the chapters in this book seem like seperate adventures featuring Dog Man and Petey, instead of one whole story.
In conclusion, this is a funny, action-packed superhero comic, and is perfect for fans of Captain Underpants.
