Beautiful presentation, lots of ways to get the win, great family game
This game was a great purchase! The first thing that is noticeable about it is that the artwork in it is just awesome! It just gives off a great fantasy, whimsical feel to it. And the components are good quality. The game on its own, is a pretty good worker placement and engine building game. But what makes this game special is the stories included in the game, the adventures that you can go on. Great game!
Above and below is a gorgeous game and I'm happy to say that the game play lives up to the artwork. I've now played in two, three and four player games and each was fun and tense. The biggest issue the game faces is that there's a lot of setup, however most of the time you'll want to play it more than once in a sitting so that's ok. The exploration mechanic serves as a nice catch-up mechanic as it can be quite high risk, high reward which I really like. The game has an elegant balance of strategy and luck and I can see myself playing it for a long time still.
You've found a new home, but deep beneath your land lie caverns of untold treasure and adventure.
You Barely Escaped
Your last village was ransacked by barbarians.
You wandered the desert, braved frozen peaks, and even paddled a log across the sea, kicking at sharks whenever they got too close, the baby strapped tightly to your back. Then you found it! Your new home. But as soon as you had the first hut built, you discovered a vast network of caverns underground, brimming with shiny treasures, rare resources, and untold adventure.
How could you limit your new village to the surface?
Overview
Above and Below is the first game in the Arzium Storybook Series, which
includes: Near and Far and Now or Never.
A mashup of town-building and storytelling, you’ll compete to build the best village above and below ground. Send villagers to perform jobs like exploring the cave, harvesting resources, and constructing houses. Will you send Hanna along on the expedition to the cave? Or should she instead spend her time teaching important skills to one of the young villagers?
Go below the surface into the great cavern for epic stories and adventures. One of your friends reads what happens. You’ll be given a choice and a lot will depend on which villagers you brought on the expedition, and who you’re willing to sacrifice to succeed.
The storybook is packed with encounters of amazing adventure, randomly chosen each time you visit the cavern.
Will you have the best village?
