Garland (1860-1940) was an American novelist, poet, essayist and short story writer, and winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Biography in 1922. This work first published in 1917 is the first of several volumes of memoirs and relates his early years on Midwestern farms and his move to Boston to pursue a career in writing.
