Presenting a broad front to the Arctic Sea, it gradually expands In width to about 50 Degrees north latitude, when it again contracts its dimensions until it reaches the Isthmus of Panama. Its winding outline presents a great extent of seacoast, which is estimated to amount to about miles on the eastern, and somewhat more on the western side, in'addition to the frozen shores of the northern border.
