Description

Excerpt from A Method for Measuring the Viscosity of Blast-Furnace Slag at High Temperatures Fulton b has determined the melting points of a series of copper slags by means of the thermal method of the Geophysical Laboratory, Such melting points correspond to that temperature at which the slag passes entirely from the crystalline to the amorphous state, and have no direct relation with the viscosity of the melt. Fulton obtained an idea of the temperature at which the slag became fluid by stirring the melt with a heavy platinum rod. The melting point temperature was much lower than the 'fluidity temperature, the difference between these two temperatures being extremely variable. An apparatus, consisting essentially of a graphite crucible with an elongated orifice in the base, has been devised by Johnsonc for determining the dripping point of slags.
