Description

A form of verse drama popular in Renaissance Europe, the masque is here revived by poet Thomas Thornburg to present a theme "whose popularity in art, and whose usefulness as a philosophical paradigm, have endured to this day: the conflict between things Dionysian and Apollonian" - darkness and light, passion and reason - as this conflict seeks its resolution in the lyric arts of poetry and song.

Author Biography:

Thomas Thornburg is Professor Emeritus at Ball State University. He is a native of Muncie, Indiana, and lives in Montana with his wife, Mary Patterson Thornburg. Thornburg is the author of three collections of poetry, Saturday Town, Ancient Letters, and American Ballads, and a novel, Where Summer Strives.
