Description

Excerpt from A Letter to the Right Hon. George Canning: To Explain in What Manner the Industry of the People and the Productions of the Country, Are Connected With, and Influenced By, Internal Bills of Exchange, Country Bank Notes, and Country Bankers, Bank of England Notes, and Branch Banks London is the great money-change for the world; it is, however, merely a point of collection and dis tribution for commodities: excepting, to a small ex tent, silks and a few articles of luxury, none of the valuable productions of the nation are fabricated in London. It is to the country, therefore, we must look for the Indication Of any good arising out of the abundance of money in london. Has there been any effect from this, or any other cause, upon the energies of industry In the country, on which we ean found a reasonable hope for renewed prosperity, to such an ex tent as will be the means of giving permanent employ ment to the destitute poor, and at wages adequate te their subsistence? I answer, No. Durlng the last two months I have passed through most parts of Eng land. I have traversed several times that Important district from Leeds to Liverpool, and through the prin cipal manufacturing parts, deliberately, to enable me to make accurate observations. I have conversed with great solicitude, and I believe with an unprejudiced mind, with expoit merchants, bankers, inland traders.
