Description

The Wayne County Jail was built in the residential area of Butternut Street in Lyons, NY in 1856. For 104 years, this jail and attached sheriff's residence was "the jail among us" where the sheriffs and their families lived and worked in the same building that held the county's prisoners. This book has been revised from the original publication by Joan La Framboise Sullivan, "The History of the Wayne County Jail, 1856-1960," including new sections on each of the sheriffs, never before seen photographs and more detailed information about the jail and the criminals held there. The 1856 Wayne County Jail is now the Museum of Wayne County History, run by the Wayne County Historical Society, which works to preserve this unique piece of Americana history.
