Description

Excerpt from A History of the Parishes of St. Ives, Lelant, Towednack and Zennor: In the County of Cornwall Whatever be the imperfections of this book, it has at least the distinction of being the first printed history of the parishes which form what we have called the Saint Ives District, save a few brief notices contained in works treating of the entire county of Corn wall. It is true that in the last century Mr. John Hicks, of Saint Ives, wrote a history of his native town, and that many extracts from his work have been handed down to us in the volumes of the county topographers; but Hicks' manuscript, valuable as no doubt it was, was never published, and has long been lost. The author therefore claims from his readers the indulgence which Should be readily Shown towards the man who is first in the field as the historian of his locality. To write a history is, in the present day, a very different undertaking from what it was fifty years ago, before the jewel mines of our public records had been opened Up. Time was when a parish Church could be dismissed as 'a mediaeval structure in the Gothick style, dedicated to St Mary and when a history of England was not so much a record of facts, as an essay on the providential development of our happy constitution in Church and State. But nowadays people read history with the Simple desire to obtain accurate information upon all points connected both with the public and private life of their fore fathers, and demand rather a digest of authentic records than a literary essay.
