That There Are Parts of the Sacred Scriptures Adapted to the Purpose of Singing This is bigotry indeed and mofi: of the mournful of the church may juf'tly be afcribed to it. The danger, that arifes to the fouls of men' fromififu'ch ifu man dev1ces, is> great and ala1 ming Taken up with thele de vices, they forget that it is only th1ough the blefiing of God 1n -chrift, upon his own infiitutions, that we have any gtound to expeei: that communion with him, without which our religious exe1ciles are vain. It is not meant, that, Where luch corrup tion in any meafure prevails, the word and oxdinances of Chrift baveno faving elfeet at all. He fulfils in his elect, all the good pleafure of his goodnefs, and the work of faith with'powa er. But we learn from his word, that men's attachment to there devices, where they are once admitted, befides be: ing evil 1n itfelf, is inordinate, and attended W1th an undervalu ing and neglect ofgod' s own inititutions for ft is in vain to imagine, that men will ufe moderatwn 1n following what ought, not to be followed at all.
