Malt, for. Fwe'et wort, defigned for thofe whofe habit of 'body might engender the fcurvy, and as a remedy for fuch who might be afllieted with that diforder.' The quan tity prefcribed for eachpatient, from one to fix pints a day, at the difcretion of the furgeon. Z. Sour Krout, of which each feaman was to be allowed two pounds a week. This is cabbage falted down, and clofe packed in cafks, after having been properly fermented lt is efieemecl by our navigators an excellent antifcorbutic. 3. Cabbage cut fmail and falted down, to which is added juniper berries, and annifeecls, which are like wife put to the four krout. 4. Portable foup, very nouriihing, and of great utility both for invalids, and thofe that are in good health. 5. Oranges, rob-of lg mons, and faloup, for theufe of the furgeons, tozbe adminiftered to the tick and fcorbutic only. 6. Mar malade of Carrots, recommended by Baron Storch _of Berlin, as a Very great autifcorbutic; but it did not as fuch aaer our expectation. This fyrup is ex: traeteclfrom yellow carrots, by evaporating theoijner' parts, till it is brought to aconfiltence of treacle. Which it much refembles both intaf'te and colour. 7. Juice Of wort and beer, infpifi'ated, as the foregoing article, and intended to fupply at times the place of beer, by mixing it with water. For this we were in debted to Mr Pelham, fecret'ary of the Victuallinge Oflice; the commiflioners of which ordered thirty-one half barrels of, this juice to be prepared for trial; nine teeniwhereof were {towed in the Refolution, and twelve on board the Adventure. Thus all the conveniences neceflary' for the prefervation of health during a long voyage, were provided in abundance; and even fome alterations were made in thecuilomary articles of pro vifions wheat being fubltituted in the roorrr of a quantity of oatmeal, and fugar infiead of oil.
