Was born at Kettering, in Nortbampton/loire, Nov. 2 3. O. S. 1697. His parents were edward Giu. And elxzabeth his wife, whofe maiden name waswvalre R. They were religious and pious perfons; whofe circumfiances did not reach afiluence, but were above contempt. His father was a Deacon of the Bapti/l church at Kettering; and was eminent for his grace, piety, and holy converfation. He firft became a member of a con gregation in the fame place, conl'ifling ofpre/byterianr, Independent: and Bapti/lr in which congregation, befides the Pafizor of it, there was a teaching Elder of the Bapti/i denomination, Mr William Wallis, who was the ad minifirator ofbap tifm by immerfion, to foch adult perlons as defired it. For fome time this mixed congregation continued in peace and harmony: but, at length, the Bapti/lr were rendered uneal'y and uncomfortable in their communion, through the oppolition made-to them by fome particular perlons. This obliged them to feparate, together with their teacher, Mr ll/allir. They foon formed them felves into a church-(tare, and chofe Mr Wallis for their Paf'tor: which was the rife and foundation of the Bap/{fl church at Kettering.
