Fewer still, perhaps, after producing such an immense quantity of prose' and verse have left it, at their death, in a state so unlikely either to arouse the interest or to challenge the judgment of coming generations. Oi Landor's writings a considerable portion can only be read in volumes of extreme rarity, and there are some things which seem to have vanished beyond recall. Along with much that might be discarded as perishable and not worth preserving, there is enough hidden away in the pages of defunct and little known periodicals to establish at least one reputation for what Dryden called no ignoble verse and' another for vigorous and incisive prose. According to his own account, Landor threw more behind the grate than would have bought a fair estate. Only by tedious research is it possible to retrieve from the limbo of back numbers as much and more to which he allowed scarcely a fairer chance of survival.
