Unless Patrick Rothfuss manages to release Doors of Stone this side of
Christmas (Unlikely, given that he's slower than George R.R. Martin), this is
probably the best book you'll read all year. I'd try and compare it to something
else, however, three weeks after finishing it, I still can't think of a
comparison that would do this book justice. I've simply never come across
anything that contains this much awesomeness (although The Kingkiller Chronicle
and James Treadwell's Advent Trilogy come close).
Words of Radiance is a book that deserves the same level of adoration and
devotion that people lavish on stories like Lord of the Rings, Ender's Game, or
Harry Potter. It is a stunningly human epic, set in a world that is both
familliar and completely alien, a world where crab-like monstrosities the size
of mountains lumber across a landscape of broken rock scoured by hurricane-force
winds. A world populated with a brilliant and often hillarious cast of
characters that you can't help but adore.
Where the Way of Kings follows the story of the slave Kaladin as he sights to
protect the men serving under him from the ravages of a pointless war, Words of
Radiance focuses on the journey of Shallan Davar, a young woman struggling to
come to terms with the nature of her magic. A Lightweaver, Shallan has the
power to forge detailed illusions from light and sound. Unfortunately, in a
world where magic only flows from the cracks in a broken soul, this ability
comes at a price; the truths Shallan hides, even from herself, in the dark
corners of her mind. Truths that, if unleashed, have the power to destroy
everyone and everything she loves. Part thriller, part epic fantasy, Words of
Radiance is a dark convoluted mystery that will keep you guessing right up until
the end.
It's an amazing book, and it's totally worth buying. If you do buy it, aim
for this edition, because the publisher's planning to split it into a trilogy
when it comes out in trade paperback, and you'll end up paying more for it then.
If there's only one book you buy this year, Words of Radiance should
be it.
That being said, at almost 1100 pages in length, it will take you a LONG
time to read (no matter how much you enjoy it, don't be tempted to try and read
it in a single day. Trust me, I tried, and it only ends in sleep deprivation).
It is also dangerously heavy. You can literally bench-press using this book. Try
not to drop it, especially if you have pets, children, or younger siblings in
the house, and watch out for muscle-fatigue while reading it. Seriously.
In summary, it's amazing, breath-taking, and you'll never ever regret
reading it. It will also break your foot if you drop it.
