I'm a big fan of Transformers, both toys and movie. But the toys are something special, transforming them from one form to another. I'm generally impressed by the leader class of Transformers and initially had Jetfire (Revenge of the Fallen), Optimus Prime (ROTF) and my all-time favourite, the Transformers Ultimate Bumblebee.
The ROTF ones are standard fare, plasticky and Jetfire is a nightmare to transform with parts popping off (which can be put back easily though). Generally rather iffy to transform. Ultimate Bumblebee is a delight to transform, and while it is mostly plastic, it is very good quality plastic and Bumblebee is HUGE, so easier to transform. And it looks cool.
Then I bit the bullet and got myself the Transformers Masterpiece MP-10 Convoy Optimus Prime and oh wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Where do I start-
It's nostalgic, it's the classic G1 Optimus Prime I fell in love with when I was a kid. The MP-10 looks darn good with shiny “metal looking” bits and therefore doesn’t look cheap like the ROTF counterparts) and feels solid in the hand. The plastic quality is superb and yeah, you get what you pay for. The colour of Optimus looks good and faithful to his original colours. I like it. In robot mode, Optimus Prime is highly posable and even though it doesn’t have metal bits like MP1, I read that the MP10 is much more posable than the MP1, so I’m thankful for that as I want an Optimus I can play with, not just display on teh shelf.
The transformation feels solid and definite, not flimsy at all. Everything goes into place as planned, without having this feeling of “forcing” bits and pieces into place like most of the standard Transformers toys. Remember, this is a Takara Tomy Masterpiece series, and it costs about 3 to 4 times your standard leader class Transformers toy! And it’s worth every single dollar, quality-wise.
And I’ve never had an Optimus Prime with a Trailer, so this MP-10 Optimus Prime to me, feels like the most COMPLETE Optimus Prime. I mean, think back to the 1984 cartoon, Optimus Prime is naked without his Trailer! The Trailer opens up and you have the robot arm and little articulated bits and pieces, and it does look like a wee little headquarters that can house what I call Sam’s little truck. And of course there’s the complimentary Sam, tiny but useful as you can put him in anything – Optimus truck mode, trailer machines, the little truck, anywhere you can stick him in! The Leadership Matrix sits comfortably in Optimus’ chest. It’s a bit hard to pull out of his chest (Optimus Prime shouldn’t give up his Leadership matrix so easily after all, LOL).
My only wee little gripe is his index finger easily pops off (but you can easily pop it back in).
Other than that, this Optimus Prime is THE PERFECT Transformers, not just across other Optimus Primes, but across ALL Transformers. I’m sad to announce that my favourite Ultimate Bumblebee is now relegated to a (close) second place. The Takara Tomy Masterpiece MP-10 Convoy Optimus Prime has now taken position #1 in my Transformers collection. In the end, now that I have the Masterpiece MP10 Optimus Prime and the Ultimate Bumblebee, I find no need to play with any other Transformers figure (until they sort out how to make Megatron the gun better!).
Yes, it’s expensive, but boy they don’t make Optimus like they make this one. It’s worth every single penny. Save up, buy it, enjoy it. You won’t regret it. I promise!
