I'm a huge fan of Nickelodeon's Avatar: the Last Airbender series and when
I heard M Night was directing the movie, I cringed. Despite the negative
reviews, I gave the movie a go. It wasn't as bad as I expected. The special
effects were impressive and the children did a good job acting (except for
Jackson Rathbone who didn't do Sokka's character justice) There were some bits
I wasn't sure of, but in my view it's the editing that let the movie down. It
could have been 10 times better if they had paid more attention to scene
transitions.
All in all, it is an enjoyable and entertaining movie for kids. Personally
for me, I much prefer the original animated series. If M Night ever turns the
Earth and Fire books into films, I only hope he treats them with extra care and
respect because the story and characters are so complex, they need to be given a
chance to shine.
